رقت الهيئة العامة للطيران المدني تصنيف مطار الأمير عبدالمحسن بن عبدالعزيز بمحافظة ينبع من مطار محلي إلى مطار إقليمي، فيما شرعت الهيئة في تشغيل رحلات دولية وإقليمية بالمطار للمساهمة في رفع معدلات النمو الاقتصادي في المنطقة وتسهيل التبادل التجاري.
جاء ذلك في خطاب وجهته الهيئة إلى أمير منطقة المدينة المنورة، رئيس مجلس المنطقة الأمير عبدالعزيز بن ماجد.
من جهته، وجه أمير المدينة محافظ ينبع بمتابعة إيصال الخدمات المطلوبة وتوفير السبل التي تساعد على تشغيل مطار الأمير عبدالمحسن بن عبدالعزيز وفق التصنيف الجديد، والرفع له عن أية ملاحظات قد تعيق التنفيذ.
يذكر أن تكلفة مشروع مطار الأمير عبد المحسن بن عبد العزيز بلغت 210 ملايين ريال تقريبا, حيث يضم عددا من المباني والمرافق العامة. ويعتبر أحدث المطارات النموذجية بالمملكة، ويمثل الجيل الجديد من المطارات الداخلية.
